FOR WANT OF A DENTIST
Boy Dies After Bacteria From Tooth Spreads to Brain
Twelve-year-old Deamonte died of a toothache Sunday. A routine, $80 tooth extraction might have saved him. If his mother had been insured. If his family had not lost their Medicaid. If Medicaid dentists weren't so hard to find. If his mother hadn't been focused on getting a dentist for his brother, who had six rotted teeth. By the time Deamonte's own aching tooth got any attention, the bacteria from the abscess had spread to his brain, doctors said. After two operations and more than six weeks of hospital care, the boy passed away. 2/28/07 Article via The Washington Post

*In February 2009, a new budget agreement was reached covering the remainder of this fiscal year as well as the 2010 year. The new budget called for the elimination of adult dental and other optional MediCal benefits. CDA has been advocating strongly with administration and legislative leaders for alternative solutions that may at least partially restore these benefits, proposing in particular the reinstatement of funding for basic fillings for teeth that otherwise would require more costly treatment and eventual extraction. However, the budget agreement approved by the legislature in July 2009 did not restore any non-emergency adult dental funding and eliminated funding for the Children’s Dental Disease Prevention Program (CDDPP). It also substantially reduced funding for the Healthy Families program.
SAN MATEO MEDICAL CENTER-SMMC DENTAL CLINICS (LISTED BELOW)
Willow, Fair Oaks and North County Dental Clinics predominantly treat scheduled children with a daily emergency drop-in service for adults, from 8:30 am to 9:30 am (Main campus drop in 7:30am to 8:30am). Comprehensive care is available for children at all the clinics. Adult care is emergency only or referral to UOP for comprehensive care. Difficult oral surgery cases are referred to the Oral Surgeon at 39th Ave. Each of these clinics, except Daly City at this time, is open on Thursday evenings to provide dental care for pregnant women on MediCal.
Adult Dental Program (ADP) - Adults can be referred by their physician or by a dentist for comprehensive care by Dental Residents at UOP Dental School or at Willow, depending on the dental services they require. A grant funded van transports patients to the dental school for treatment on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Dental Residents come to Willow on Tuesdays and Wednesdays to treat patients. Patients are sent from their physician for a panoramic x-ray. From this x-ray, they are assigned to either UOP in San Francisco or Willow Denture Clinic.
If you do not have insurance, a Community Health Advocate will help you find the best health coverage program for you. These programs include Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, Healthy Kids, and Access and Care for Everyone (ACE). Call the Community Health Advocate Hotline at 650.573.3595, or go to a clinic location to apply.
